It would seem by all the statistics on the current job market across the United States, is that we are in it for the long haul. The recovery is going take longer than we would like or some would anticipate. What does that mean for the average person current looking for a job or concerned about keeping the one they have today. It doesn't take much research to understand we are in an extremely difficult job market and that all indication say will probably be here for the next five years or so. What are people doing to cope with the reality of the situation? Some are choosing to stay in college for a looker period of time to wait it out. Others have come to the realization that a career change maybe in the best interest of riding it out and hopefully gaining a few new skills sets along the way. While some have given up based on a belief there are no jobs to be found in their area of desire and expertise. What is the right answer for this current situation of the worst job market in decades? Well it is not giving up because there are jobs out there for people willing to deal with change in career, salary, resident, environment, skill set and the list goes on. What does this add up to for the person that feels they have worked harder than ever before to find a job? It means you more than likely are going to have to work harder still. My first time out of the job market after being employed for almost 20 years by the same company was met with mixed emotions. Since I had always been employed from my teen years until then from cutting grass, to bagging in the local supermarket, driving a pickup to pick-up and deliver fork lift engines for overhaul and repair, I was convinced I wouldn't be unemployed for long. It took me about 3 months in 1995 to find a job but even then I had to re-locate my family, accept a position essentially making the same amount of money and take on a new career to achieve it. How many of us are willing to make those kinds of changes to have a job? My point being that even at a time when the market was still considered to be quote on quote ok I had to make some fairly significant changes to get re-employed. This is an extremely competitive market we are in and only the strong and persistent will be able to ride the wave. It wasn't until 2000 before I had to do it again and that time it took 11 months but the message is not how long it takes to find the job it how much effort you apply to finding one that may last a day or even a lifetime.
